“As we send out the updated question set, we wanted to let you know the general changes we have made. Nothing big, or maybe even noticeable, but things of note”
- We eliminated all “When” questions in which “again” was the sole answer. The reason is that it is often too difficult to decipher when Matthew is using “again” as a conjunction and when it is appropriate to see it as an adjective indicating the time-quality of an action. We hope this will make things simpler on the quizzers. “Again” can still be part of or an alternate answer to a when question, but quizzers should not have to hunt for it to make questions.
- We have tried to sort through the many, many alternate questions in the set. At the time the set was written, we were dedicated to pre-making as many combo questions as possible. Since then, we have further refined what kind of questions actually fit as combination questions. So, going back to reflect this refining has caused us to separate questions in which it was determined that two different sets of information were required to answer two questions that had been previously combined. The only point of note for quizzers here is to note is just to remember that each phrase in a verse is trying to communicate a central idea, and questions are made to get at those central ideas and thoughts. No change here, just a continuation of what we have been doing.
- We fixed several typos and awkward sentence constructions.
- There is at least one example of where a “Whom” and a “Where” are alternate questions for the same answer. And it really is the only way to do it in that specific scenario. This is why it is important for QM’s and quizzers to remember that just because a quizzer says “What” and the question on the paper says “Whom” does not automatically mean the quizzer should get an error. We implore QM’s to give quizzers time to develop their questions to determine whether it is, in essence, the same question in front of them just with a different interrogative, and we implore quizzers not to challenge QM’s to get more time back on the clock for taking the time to ensure that a quizzer’s question is, indeed, the wrong one before awarding an error. Interrogatives are not in the verses and it is harder than you might think to determine which one should be used, at times. We try to choose the most natural option, but interpretive work is sometimes required. Please give each other grace, on this. And us!
- We are a bit split on how to handle questions where the verse says, “He/Jesus said, ‘Truly, I tell you… something, something.” For now, this construction exists as alternate questions “What did He/Jesus say” and “What do I tell you” with the content of what Jesus said/tells them listed as the answer. We will be glad to receive feedback on how quizzers handle these questions in your ministry, and we can adjust accordingly.
- Our other split is on how to handle the phrase “Father in heaven” or “Father who is in heaven.” Currently, we are not asking “Where” questions on this phrase. First, because Jesus often seems to use the phrase to indicate the Father’s position of authority, rather than his physical place. Second, because there are some specific examples of the phrase’s use where making a “where” question becomes theologically problematic. We try not to take sides, theologically, so I’ve currently made the executive decision not to ask these questions. It is a matter for continued discussion and debate, and you’re free to contribute your thoughts to us at any time.
